From Earth to Home: How We 3D Print a Clay House
Start with the Earth Beneath Your Feet.
Every home begins with the place it stands.
We start by carefully digging down around 30 cm below the surface to access the natural earth beneath the organic topsoil. We do this to avoid roots, plants and other organic material that we don’t want in our clay mixture.
The earth at every location is different, and that’s part of what makes each project special. We test the local soil on site to understand its unique composition and determine how it can best be used in the building process.
Rather than bringing in a generic material from somewhere else, we work with what the land already provides. The result is a building material that is genuinely connected to its surroundings.
Creating a Clay Mix Made for You
Once we understand the local earth, we can begin developing the clay mixture.
Natural additives can be introduced to improve different properties of the material — from strength and durability to insulation, moisture regulation and colour. We can also experiment with different ingredients to create a material blend that is unique to each project and its environment.
Depending on the location and the qualities we want to achieve, these additives might include natural fibres such as sisal, tannins, mycelium, cinnamon or even coffee.
Yes, you read that correctly. We could potentially build a house with cinnamon in its walls. We’re not quite ready to recommend a cookie house just yet — but we’re definitely curious where the idea could lead.
Designing Around Nature
With the material understood, we can start designing the home.
Using parametric design, we can create forms that would be difficult, expensive or even impossible to build using conventional construction methods. 3D printing allows us to move beyond straight lines and rigid boxes, opening the door to soft curves, organic shapes and walls that respond to the landscape around them.
But the design isn’t only about aesthetics.
We can combine parametric design with environmental data such as local temperature, humidity, wind and weather patterns. By analysing these conditions, we can develop a building designed to respond to its particular location — helping to regulate heat, airflow, moisture and comfort naturally.
Every site has its own climate. Our aim is to let the design listen to it.
Printing the House
Once the design and material are ready, the printer brings them together.
The clay mixture is loaded into our 3D printing system, which carefully deposits the material layer by layer according to the digital design. Instead of constructing a house from hundreds of separate components, we can build much of the structure directly on site.
The printing process allows us to create complex shapes while using only the material we need. It also gives us the freedom to vary wall thickness, incorporate curves and create details directly into the structure.
Slowly, layer by layer, the digital model becomes a physical home.
Finishing a Home That Belongs to Its Place
Printing the walls is only part of the journey. Once the structure is complete, we can add the finishing elements needed to turn it into a comfortable, functional home.
Natural finishes, windows, doors, services, insulation and interior elements can all be integrated into the wider design. Wherever possible, we continue to work with natural and locally appropriate materials.
The result is more than a 3D-printed building. It is a home made from the earth of its own site, shaped around its local climate and designed specifically for the people who will live in it.
